Coffee with a temperature of its own

Lava Café opened in 2014 with a roaster in the back and a theory up front: a neighborhood café can be both a daily habit and a small daily ceremony. The name comes from the roaster drum — always glowing, always audible from the counter — and from the molten, slow warmth we want every visit to have. Nine years on, the roaster still runs before dawn, and the beans in your cup were roasted days, not months, ago.

We roast single-origin coffees from direct-trade relationships with 14 farms across Ethiopia, Colombia, Guatemala, Sumatra, and Yemen. The farm names are printed on every bag and chalked on the menu board, because traceability is a flavor claim as much as an ethical one.

On the menu

  • Espresso and filter pours from rotating single origins, brewed on-third wave lines by baristas who compete.
  • House-made syrups in 11 rotating seasonal flavors — vanilla bean, burnt honey, tamarind — no bottles from a distributor.
  • An all-day chef-driven menu: breakfast plates, grain bowls, and pastry that justifies the reservation.

We take reservations because mornings should not be a lottery. Whether you come for a quiet hour with a laptop, a first date, or the full weekend brunch, the room is built to hold the pace you bring. Regulars order by name; newcomers get walked through the board.

Roasting philosophy

We roast to origin character, not to a house style that flattens everything into 'our taste.' A washed Ethiopian arrives floral and tea-like; a Sumatran lands earthy and heavy. Our roaster profiles every lot on sample batches before it earns a spot in the case, and blends only when a component earns it.

Lava Café is a specialty coffee roaster and neighborhood café in one: direct-trade beans roasted in-house, honest food, and a table waiting when you arrive. Come early — the first pour of the day is still the best one.
